What should you text after a first date?
Send a short, warm text the next morning that thanks them and mentions one specific moment from the date, like "Thanks for last night, I'm still thinking about your terrible-movie list." Keep it to one or two lines. If you want a second date, ask in the same message or soon after, with a real day and place.
That's the whole formula: thanks, one detail, short, and a plan if you want one. Below are the five ways people get it wrong, with the fix for each. The checker at the top scores your draft against all five as you type.
Five texting mistakes after a first date
Waiting three days to look relaxed
The most direct evidence says waiting costs you. In a study of 543 adults summarized by Simply Psychology in June 2026, a next-morning text scored 6.15 out of 9 for wanting the relationship to go further, against 5.50 for a text two days later. The delay made the sender look less interested and less reliable.
The generic "had fun!"
"Had fun" is fine, but it could be sent to anyone. One specific detail shows you were listening. Thanking them helps too: in a 2014 study in the journal Emotion, Lisa Williams and Monica Bartlett found that people who were thanked by someone new saw that person as warmer and were more likely to share their contact details.
Writing an essay
A long recap of the evening puts pressure on them to match it. Aim for under 40 words. If there's more to say, that's what date two is for.
"We should do it again sometime"
Vague is easy to send and hard to answer. A specific day, time and place, or a choice of two or three, lets them reply in one word. We compared the options in how to ask for a second date by text.
Apologizing, hedging and triple punctuation
"Sorry if this is weird lol" and "!!!" read as nerves. They're not a disaster, but they make your text about your worry rather than their evening. Say the warm thing plainly.
One detail beats ten exclamation marks.
Honest limits of this advice
The timing study used imagined dates and texts with no words in them, so it tells you when, not what. The checker at the top is a simple word-pattern check, not a judge of chemistry: it can't tell a great joke from a flat one, and it will happily pass a text that isn't really you. Read your draft out loud before sending. If it sounds like you, it's right.
Who should pick something else: if you've already made plans for date two in person, you don't need SecondYes, just a "looking forward to Thursday". It's also not a dating app (no profiles, no matching), and it's iPhone and iPad only, though the person you invite can reply from any browser.
What to text after a first date: quick answers
Should I text first after a first date?
Yes, if you enjoyed it. Whoever texts first is simply the one who gets to say the nice thing first. There's no evidence that waiting for them to go first makes you more attractive.
What time should I send it?
The next morning is the sweet spot in the research. In a pre-study of 100 people, about six hours after the date felt ideal, under 20 minutes felt too soon and over 40 hours felt too late.
What do I text if I didn't feel a spark?
Send a short, kind, clear message: thank them, say you didn't feel a romantic connection, and wish them well. "Thanks for last night, I enjoyed meeting you. I didn't feel a romantic spark, but I wish you the best." Clear is kinder than slowly fading out.
Should I ask for a second date in the first text?
You can, if you're sure. A thank-you plus a specific plan in one message works well. If you'd rather keep the first text light, ask within the next few days.
