How long should you wait for a second date?
Text the next morning, ask within a few days, and aim to meet within about a week. A recent study of 543 adults found a next-morning text raised interest in a second date more than texting right away or waiting two days. Dating services' advice lines up: ask within 0 to 5 days, meet within a week.
What the study on text timing found
Researchers at Leuphana University in Germany, led by Lars Teichmann, asked 543 adults to picture a pleasant first dinner date and then get a follow-up text at one of three times. The paper in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships (summarized by Simply Psychology in June 2026) measured how much people wanted things to go further, on a 9-point scale:
Relationship intentions, 1 to 9 scale. Teichmann et al., Journal of Social and Personal Relationships.
A smaller pre-study of 100 people in the UK and US put the ideal at about six hours after the date, "too soon" at under 20 minutes and "too late" at over 40 hours. The interesting part is why: an instant text read as a bit needy, but that didn't hurt much. What a two-day wait hurt was the sense that the other person was interested back and reliable.
The limits are real. People imagined the date rather than going on one, the date was deliberately neutral, and the texts had no actual words in them. Treat it as a nudge, not a rule.
A next-morning text says "I had a good time" without saying "I've been waiting by my phone."
Waiting time, by the step
| Step | Sweet spot | Source |

| Thank-you text | The next morning | Teichmann et al. |

| Meet again | Within about a week | Tawkify |
"Playing it cool" has one famous study behind it: in 2011, Whitchurch, Wilson and Gilbert found women rating Facebook profiles were most drawn to men whose feelings were unknown. That was strangers on a screen, not two people who just shared a dinner. After a good date, the newer evidence says that going quiet mostly reads as not interested.
Second date timing in the holidays
If your first date lands in late November or December, the calendar does the waiting for you. AAA projected 122.4 million Americans would travel 50 miles or more between December 20 and January 1 last season. If one of you is leaving soon, say so in the next-morning text and either fit date two in before the trip or name a real day after it. "Can't wait to see you when I'm back, how's the 4th?" beats a vague "after the holidays".
How SecondYes handles the ask

You offer up to three plans (place, day, time and a map) in one private link. They open it in an ordinary web browser and choose one, ask for another time, or say "not this time". Calendar Fit, part of the optional Pro subscription, suggests times you're actually free; it reads only when events start and end, never titles or guests, and only on your device. Your first invitations are free.
Who should pick something else
- You already asked at the end of the date and they said yes. Lovely. Just text a day and time; no app needed.
- You haven't met in person. SecondYes is not a dating app. No profiles, no matching; it's for people who've already had a first date.
- You're on Android. SecondYes is for iPhone and iPad, though the person you invite can answer from any browser.
Honest limit: the timing check above is built from one lab study and two dating services' advice, not from your situation. If they told you they're slammed until Friday, believe them over any chart. And the invitation details travel inside the link, so send it only to the person you're inviting.
A worked example
Tuesday dinner, Wednesday text
Wednesday, 9:40amAn illustration, not a transcript. It hits all three marks: a next-morning text, an ask two days later, and a second date inside the week.
Second date timing questions
Is it bad to text right after a first date?
Not bad, just slightly less effective in one study. Texting immediately scored 5.80 out of 9 on relationship intentions, against 6.15 for the next morning. A quick "home safe, thanks for tonight" is fine; save the real follow-up for the morning.
Is waiting three days to text still a rule?
No. In the Leuphana study, even a two-day wait lowered interest compared with a next-morning text, mainly because it made the sender seem less interested and less reliable.
How long is too long between a first and second date?
More than about a week starts to cool things off, according to Tawkify's advice. If schedules make that impossible, name a real day in your ask so the gap has an end.
What if they haven't replied to my ask?
Give it a day or two, then one light, easy-to-decline follow-up. If that goes unanswered too, take it as an answer and let it go kindly.
